Let's talk about Ugg
Ugg has associated its name with the manufacture and design of sheepskin shoes and accessories. Although of Australian origin, the original idea for Ugg boots was born in America when Australian surfer Brian Smith moved to Southern California and in collaboration with Doug Jensen they began importing them without achieving commercial success. In the mid-1980s, Smith registered the trademark "Original UGG Boot UGG Australia" noting a gradual increase in sales which increased exponentially after their use by the US Olympic team for the needs of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Deckers Brands acquired it a few years later and owns it to this day. In 2003, UGG boots were featured on Oprah Winfrey's show in the Oprah's Favorite Things segment, which skyrocketed UGG sales overnight and the classic sheepskin boots became a must-have item for every stylish woman. Celebrities such as Blake Lively, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez chose them for their appearances in the city and on the red carpet, while trendsetter Sarah Jessica Parker as "Carrie Bradshaw" in Sex and the City made them extremely famous among the general public. Clothing and accessories such as bags were soon added to the Ugg collection, while its men's collection, which was released in 2011, received equally positive reviews. Ugg boots are extremely popular and loved for the soft and warm feel they offer while supporting the foot, although flexible in construction. It is worth noting that in the early 2020s, Ugg announced the gradual elimination of wool from its products in a shift to more sustainable design, coming in 2024 to launch its first vegan Ugg boots in collaboration with designer Collina Strada made from sugarcane and recycled polyester fibers.
